Abstract:
Background And Aims: General Medical Council (GMC) and Health Education England (HEE) emphasise the importance of continuous learning for doctors (NHS, 2016) (HEE, 2016). The GMC’s (2015) Promoting Excellence states it is the responsibility of clinical departments to provide a comprehensive induction, organise adequate supervision, and optimise teaching programmes tailored to doctors’ needs, in order to meet curriculum requirements (NHS, 2016). We aimed to identify how the training programme for resident doctors in our paediatric department could improve, and implement changes to fulfil these objectives.
Methods: A nominated teaching coordinator conducted a survey to 11 doctors (foundation and GP trainees) regarding the paediatric rotation training programme.
Note: Interventions (below) have been implemented, and second-cycle results are being processed in April, and would be able to be presented.
Results: Overall, 81.8% of doctors wanted a regular teaching session programme, and 72.7% sought a more comprehensive induction.
Majority of doctors (63.6%) reported the primary barrier for attendance was lack of regularly organised sessions.
Induction: 77.8% of doctors reported a lack of a comprehensive induction programme, yet 88.9% sought support from the more detailed induction booklet, therefore this can be utilised when improving induction. 66.7% of doctors would be happy to contribute to updating this.
Additional comments: Doctors also reported that emails highlighting clinical learning points were helpful (81.8%), however further simulation sessions (72.7%) and access to paediatric resources (90.9%) were desired.
Conclusion: Interventions made to improve the training programme for doctors:
- Nominating a teaching coordinator to monitor the training programme
- Sign up forms to organise weekly senior doctor teaching sessions with feedback
- Collaboratively updating an induction booklet for incoming doctors every rotation
- Continue sharing ad-hoc clinical learning points to doctors
- Organising regular simulation sessions throughout the rotation e.g. Neonatal Life Support
- Increasing distribution of paediatric guideline resources
