Abstract:
Child mental health is essential for emotional regulation, social interaction, learning capacity, and overall wellbeing. Childhood emotional and behavioral disorders are increasingly recognized as major public health concerns worldwide, affecting children’s academic performance, family relationships, and social functioning. Although occasional impulsive or defiant behavior is considered a part of normal child development, persistent disturbances may indicate underlying psychological and behavioral disorders requiring early intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the role of Ayurveda in the prevention and management of childhood emotional and behavioral disorders through a review of classical Ayurvedic concepts and contemporary literature. According to Ayurveda, the causative factors for such disorders can originate during preconception (Garbha Purva Nidana), prenatal (Garbha Kaleena Nidana), perinatal (Prasava Kaleena Nidana), and postnatal (Prasavoththara Nidana) stages, influencing both physical and psychological development of the child. The findings of the study revealed that Ayurvedic preventive and therapeutic approaches such as Sadvritta (good conduct), Achara Rasayana (ethical lifestyle practices), Satvavajaya Chikitsa (psychotherapy/mind-control therapy), Yoga, meditation, Medhya Rasayana drugs, and selected Panchakarma procedures may positively influence emotional stability, attention, social behavior, and stress management in children. Furthermore, healthy parenting practices and lifestyle modifications were identified as important supportive measures in improving children’s behavioral wellbeing. The study concludes that Ayurveda provides a holistic and preventive framework for promoting child mental health and managing emotional and behavioral disorders. Early Ayurvedic interventions focusing on psychological balance, moral values, and healthy lifestyles may contribute to improved quality of life among children and their families.
